No matter how dominant a team is in its domestic league, it still hungers for a continental crown. This is especially so in Europe where teams are always making strong shots at the UEFA Champions League trophy. Fortunes have been varied in this quest, with some teams winning it several times and others failing just as often.
Here are some of the teams that have experienced the most UCL glory over the years.
Real Madrid
Real Madrid is the most successful team in the competition. It has achieved this through bursts of domination to accumulate a whopping 13 titles. When they first won it in 1956, they went ahead to continue winning until 1960. They again won it three times between 1998 and 2002, and, most recently, four times between 2014 and 2018.
AC Milan
Despite its waning dominance in Italy, AC Milan still holds an enviable record in Europe. They have won the title seven times and finished in the second position on a further four occasions. Their most recent win came in 2007.
Liverpool
Defending champions Liverpool come in the third position with six wins. They fell to Real Madrid in the 2018 final before winning it in 2019, a season that involved coming back from a 3-0 first-leg loss to Barcelona. They are in it with intent again in 2020.
Barcelona
Barcelona has five Champions League titles, four of those collected in a dominant run between 2006 and 2015. They have appeared to slip in recent seasons, going out to Roma and Liverpool despite having commanding leads.
Bayern Munich
Bayern Munchen rounds up the top five, holding a joint record of five titles with Barcelona. They, however, achieved this feat before Barcelona, getting to the number five in 2013. They have been in the finals a further five times and are also in the running for 2020 glory.
